It uses 4-point numerical differentiation in the inner points, near the boundaries it switches to 2-point formula. Maybe it is problem in your differentiation code... you may try to differentiate your function numerically, and to compare results with analytic gradient.

BTW, did you upgraded to 3.7.0?

That`s what I fear, but I'm bored of checking it without finding any mistake, what does not mean it doesn't exist.
